Hawaii Man Runs Across America to Raise Awareness for Maui's Recovery

Benny Reinicke, a Lahaina man, recently undertook a remarkable journey across the United States during the holiday season with the purpose of raising awareness for Maui's recovery efforts.

His compelling story began with an unfortunate event - the fire outbreak on Wainee Street, where his distinctive blue car was among the abandoned vehicles on Front Street.

Forced to jump into the ocean and wait eight hours for rescue, he eventually found temporary housing in a Kaanapali Hotel. Feeling frustrated by the limited housing options, Reinicke took it upon himself to draw attention to Lahaina's ongoing struggles.

Motivated by the determination to make a difference, he embarked on a mission to New York City, where he donned a "Lahaina Strong" shirt and carried the flag, chanting and capturing the attention of passersby.

His journey received support from two local companies as he made stops in various states, including Pennsylvania, Missouri, Nevada, Arizona, and ultimately ending in Long Beach, California.

Reinicke expressed his desire to run the entire country but needed to check in with the Red Cross on Maui. His remarkable initiative and resilience have resonated with people as he continues to be a beacon of hope for the recovery of Lahaina.
